From 1990-94, he was the first director of the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center in Battle Creek. From 1971-1990, he was the K-12 Director of Mathematics and Computer Education for the Shawnee Mission, Kansas Public Schools (a large suburban Kansas City school district). He taught junior high science and mathematics and high school chemistry in Shawnee Mission for five years. Terry completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in science and mathematics education at Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas. He began post graduate work in chemistry at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1966 and completed his doctorate in chemistry at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island in 1970 followed by a year of post-doctoral research at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.
