Academic Systems Behavior Systems


Response to Intervention
 is an emerging approach to meeting the needs of all students that holds considerable promise. It is a dynamic problem-solving process. 

In the RtI model:

  • A student with academic/behavioral delays is given one or more research-validated interventions.
  • The student's academic progress is monitored frequently to see if those interventions are sufficient to help the student to catch up with his or her peers.
  • If the student fails to show significantly improved academic skills despite several well-designed and implemented interventions, this failure to respond to intervention can be viewed as evidence of an underlying Learning Disability.

Tier 1

All students in Tier 1 receive high-quality, scientifically based instruction, differentiated to meet their needs.


Tier 2

In Tier 2, students not making adequate progress in the core curriculum are provided interventions that are more intensive and matched to their needs.


Tier 3

In Tier 3, students receive individualized, intensive interventions that target the students' skill deficits.


At every Tier, instruction, strategies, and interventions must be done with fidelity.
