Reading Tips for Parents

  • Read aloud to your child daily and enjoy the experience!
  • Provide an environment that is rich with books and all kinds of reading materials, and let your child see you reading.
  • Give your child a wide variety of life experiences and discuss those events with them.
  • Allow for enriching experiences with people, places, and things that build on concepts and make stories familiar.
  • Keep paper and pencils or markers available for your child to draw, write, and create.
  • Let your child see you writing, and ask them to help with such things as cards, labels or grocery lists.
  • Take your child to the book store or library, and help them get their own library card.
  • Appreciate your child's interests, and help them choose books according to those interests.
  • Provide the appropriate books at the right time. Provide the most supportive environment possible.
