Student working with drafting software

Drafting Technology

Every concept or idea for a new product, house or commercial building must be designed before it can be manufactured or built. Students in the Drafting Technology program will be taught this process from concept design through product development. Students will be able to design products and then produce the prototype using a 3-D Rapid Prototype system.

First-year students complete the manual/CAD drafting component by identifying drafting tools and media, developing lettering skills, sketching and line techniques; using geometric construction techniques; and constructing single, multi, and auxiliary view drawings. Students also learn dimensioning systems, fasteners, construct assembly, and detail drawings. Students identify weldments and lay out an architectural drawing.

Following successful completion of the manual/CAD drafting component, students begin training in Solidworks 3-D software. Students will learn to create three-dimensional drawings electronically. Students will spend a considerable amount of time mastering 3-D modeling techniques.

Specific areas of study include:

  • Junior drafter – Board work and AutoCAD LT
  • Senior drafter – Solidworks
  • Mechanical detailer – Solidworks
  • Architectural detailer – Chief architect

Second-year students will have the opportunity to attend St. Clair County Community College (SC4) based on teacher recommendation.

Please Note: Students in this program sit at their workstations for long periods of time, focusing on various assignments. The work is primarily sedentary in nature.
