2008-2009 SkillsUSA, Region 2 East, Welding Competition Participants
The 2008-2009 SkillsUSA Region 2 East Welding Competitions took place on Friday, February 27 at St. Clair County Community College. The event encompassed competitions in five areas of weldment: Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, Oxy-fuel Welding, and an Over-All contest. Participating students are enrolled in welding training programs from Golightly Career and Technical Center in Detroit, Utica Stevenson High School in Utica, as well as, St Clair TEC. The top three competitors in each area have advanced to the state competition to be held in Lansing on April 25th. Students from St. Clair TEC took 13 of the 15 state qualifying spots in the event.
SkillsUSA Region 2 East held their regional competitions on February 27 & 28. Region 2 East is comprised of participating school districts within Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, and St Clair Counties.

On Saturday, February 28, several other competitions took place at four different host sites.
The Romeo Engineering and Technology Center was the site for the Metal Machining contests: Precision Machining, CNC Milling and CNC Turning. Participating schools were Romeo Engineering and Technology Center near Romeo, Utica Stevenson High School and St. Clair TEC. Four TEC students will be moving on to the state competition.
Food Preparation competitions were held at the Macomb Community College Center Campus. The contests in this area are Commercial Baking and Culinary Arts. Students participating in these events are enrolled in training programs from Golightly Career and Technical Center, Romeo Engineering and Technology Center, Anchor Bay High School and St Clair TEC. Two students from St. Clair TEC will go to the state competition in this area.
Macomb Community College South Campus was the host site for competitions in Automotive Technology and Digital Media Technology. Contests in Automotive Technology were: Mobil Electronics, Automotive-Brakes, Automotive-Electrical, Automotive-New Vehicle Preparation, and Automotive-Master. Contests in Digital Media Technology were: Photography and Advertising Design. Participating schools in these events were: Warren Fitzgerald High School, Pankow Career Center, Chippewa Valley High School, Anchor Bay High School, Romeo Engineering and Technology Center, and St Clair TEC. Six students from St. Clair TEC have advanced to the state level in these areas.
The St. Clair Technical Education Center also hosted several competition areas: Building Construction Technology, Public Safety, Collision Repair Technology and Information Technology. Contests in Building Construction were: Residential Plumbing, Residential Wiring, Masonry and Carpentry. Public Safety included two competitions: Crime Scene Investigation and Criminal Justice. The contests in Information Technology were Computer Maintenance and Internetworking and Collision Repair Technology consisted of contests in Automotive Refinishing and Collision Repair. Visiting schools were: Oakland Technical Center Southeast, Detroit Academy of Arts, Romeo Engineering and Technology Center, Pankow Career Center, Centerline High School, and Utica Stevenson High School. St. Clair TEC will be sending 19 students to the state level in these areas.
In all, 60 students from St. Clair TEC have advanced to the state level of competition in their respective areas. The State competitions will be held in Lansing on April 24th, 25th & 26th.

Alex Super, Nick Shepley, Matt LaDuke and Josiah Kreidler
Exciting news from our TEC students attending National SkillsUSA. Our students earned two gold medals and one silver, adding an exciting end to a full week in Kansas City. Nick Shepley took home the gold medal in Precision Machining. Alex Super took a gold in Mobile Electronics, a new contest in Automotive Technology. Josiah Kreidler and Matt LaDuke won the silver in Audio Production. Craig Wilder and James Quandt were just shy of earning a medal, coming in fifth place in Mechatronics.
